A tutor who has recently navigated school mathematics can bring a familiar perspective and make asking questions feel less intimidating. Age alone does not make a good tutor; patience, subject knowledge and the ability to guide a student matter too.
We ask students to explain what they understand and where they are stuck. That gives us a starting point and gives them room to ask questions without feeling they should already know the answer.
We use questions, hints and smaller steps to point students in the right direction. When an explanation is needed, we give it, then let the student take the lead again.
We give students time to try, make mistakes and check their reasoning. The aim is for them to leave with confidence in their own thinking and a method they can use without us beside them.
Zedlin is studying Electrical Engineering and studied Extension 2 Mathematics and Engineering Studies in Year 12. He started Zedlin Tutoring to help students build their understanding of mathematics and confidence in their own ability.
